FRANCE, THE 2018 WORLD CUP WINNERS

France were the deserving winners in what can be crowned as one of the most thrilling world cup finals to ever be played. The highest scoring final since 1966 when England beat West Germany 4-2. Although they were tipped as one of the favorites to lift the trophy, It was not an easy road to the final. Their first test came in their opener against Australia when they had to rely on VAR to win 2-1.

The Russia 2018 world cup saw the elimination of some of the biggest names at quite an early stage. Former champions Germany were the first to go in what is turning out to be the “curse of the world cup winners.” A trend that has become all too familiar. If by any chance France does not qualify for the round of 16 in the next world cup, they will be the 4th consecutive world cup winners to do so since Italy in 2006.

To book a ticket in the finals, France had to trounce over Argentina and Belgium respectively. Both respectable names in the world of football. When Croatia against all odds, reached the finals many fans thought that France would have the easiest 90 minutes. However, the Croatians had other plans as they had us holding our breaths for the whole time that the game was played.

It was France who took the lead through the first ever own goal in a world cup final. Mario Mandzukic was trying to head out a dangerous cross from Antoine Griezman when the ball grazed his head and flew right into their net giving France the much-needed advantage. A few minutes later Croatia was back in the game after Perisic’s shot lasered past Hugo Loris to make it 1-1 after 28 minutes. In another unfortunate twist of events, France were rewarded a penalty after Perisic seemed to strike the ball with his hand inside their box. The referee had to rely on VAR once again to make the decision. Griezman converted the penalty which saw the game end 2-1 at halftime.

Two goals from Pogba and Mbappe in the second half seemed to have sealed the fate for Croatia. However, an error of judgment from the Les Bleus shotstopper Loris just seemed to rekindle Croatia’s hope for the title. They gave it their all but their never-say-never attitude that had seen them accomplish what no one before them could, was not enough to save them. It was Didier Deschamps Men that had the last laugh. The man who captained the French into their first ever World cup title 20 years ago had done it again.

Together with the legendary, Zinedine Zidane, they beat Brazil 3-0 to clinch the first ever title for France. Now in 2018, from the sideline, he has managed to make history. Going forward the French will have a lot to look forward to. One of the key players that will definitely be crucial to France’s future is Kylian Mbappe. At 19 years old, the potential is just limitless. And we have seen what he can do. Fast and clinical. Managing four goals in his first world cup. I guess it’s safe to  assume he is the next big thing. The new French hero.  No one would have bet on France to become the world champion so what’s next in the sport betting or gambling industry?
